Animal Signs in Chinese Astrology
Many of us would have observed the animal signs on napkins in Chinese restaurants. These animal signs are actually the ancient sun signs of Chinese astrology. They are symbols used to define the basic qualities of humans. The Chinese astrology uses the person's date of birth to associate a sign with him. It makes use of the calendar, cosmos, and philosophy to predict the events in the future. Every sign in the Chinese zodiac is associated with a different animal name and also corresponds to one complete Chinese calendar year. The Chinese New Year occurs on different dates every year.
The reason for the use of the twelve animal signs is not exactly known, although there are some ancient theories. According to a legend, Lord Buddha had invited all the earth’s animals for a gathering before he was about to leave for his final departure and only twelve of the animals had turned up. In order to appreciate this, Buddha named a year after them in order of which they had arrived.
According to another legend, Jade emperor had held a race to find out who is the fastest animal. He said that the first twelve animals that would be successful in crossing a chosen river would be given the honor to represent the twelve earthy branches which constitute the order of the Lunar years. It is said that the ox had offered to allow a cat and a rat to ride on his back while crossing the river because they were both poor swimmers. However, during the course of the race, the rat pushed the cat into the river and crossed it by sitting next to the ox’s ear. When they were about to reach the shore, the rat jumped and landed before the ox to become the winner. The pig finished last.
According to this legend, the cat which drowned in the river never made it to the shore and was not included in the zodiac. But due to its tricky nature, the cat finds its way into the zodiac every now and then. The years 1989 and 2002 were cat years because they were divisible by thirteen. Since these years are also snake and horse years respectively, the person belonging to this zodiac will have combined traits, associated with the cat and the animal under which they are born. Since this now is a thirteen year cycle instead of a twelve year cycle, the cat advances each time by one place until it reaches the end of the cycle. It is somewhat similar to the concept of the leap year in the Gregorian calendar.
